Initially the new charity will have a structural deficit. Under the planning permission, educational use of the wood is limited: educational revenue covers the running costs of the facilities, but has not covered the funding needs of conservation, capital repairs/improvements, or forestry costs which well exceed revenue in most years.

In addition to gifting the freehold of the Wood to the Trust, Alan Heeks will also be gifting sufficient funding to cover the financial deficit of the Trust for the first few years. During this time, the Trustees will be exploring strategies to make the Wood and the Trust financially sustainable for the medium and long term.
