“A beautiful site for powerful work”
Available to hire throughout the year, Hazel Hill Wood is a truly unique facility that allows groups the peace and tranquility of a magical 70 acre woodland and the comfort and convenience of indoor facilities. The sustainable, off-grid, eco buildings at Hazel Hill Wood offer visitors heated accommodation throughout the year, all powered by wood burning stoves fed from our own wood.
Visitors are able to utilise the impressive facilities on offer; two large group meeting spaces, fully equipped catering kitchen, loft ‘chill out’ space, sauna, hot tub, traditional round house and fire circles. Accommodation consists of a mixture of bedrooms and dormitory style sleeping areas and all have access to toilets and shower facilities.
The Hideaway – our new accommodation building at Hazel Hill Wood
Spring 2020 will see the completion of plans we’ve been working on for two years to expand the number, size and diversity of groups that we can host at Hazel Hill.
Construction is already well advanced on our new accommodation building, the Hideaway. This delightful, comfortable, low-impact timber eco-building will enable us to offer three new residential options:
1. Total group size up to 34 people.
2. Total group size, using only beds, not foam mattresses, and without steep or external stairs, 28 people.
3. Single rooms for 16 people.
The EU Leader grant has funded a significant proportion of the Hideaway construction costs. Trustees and the operating team at Hazel Hill thank the New Forest LEADER, and New Forest District Council.
The Hideaway is part funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe Investing in rural areas.
We have everything to suit the needs of school or youth groups, individuals and families, private businesses and organisations looking for a unique space to hold events. All the buildings at the wood have electricity from photo-voltaic systems, running water from a ground water capture system and heating powered by wood burning stoves. Our facilities allow you to be immersed in nature while still having the simple comforts of modern life.
The following facilities are available to use at Hazel Hill Wood:
- Group sleeping areas with separate leader/teacher rooms in the same building.
- Family and individual rooms, two with ensuite bathrooms.
- Good hot showers, and user-friendly composting loos.
- Large kitchen.
- Group dining area to seat 34.
- Group meeting rooms.
- Total indoor sleeping capacity up to 34 people, or 28 in rooms with beds and easy access, or 16 in single rooms only
- Drying rooms.
- Covered outdoor seating areas.
- Round Oak table to seat 30.
- Wood fired hot tub
- Outdoor fire circles.
The Oak House
The Oak House is the main indoor gathering place, graceful and comfortable: fully insulated and heated. It can accommodate 13 using the permanent sleeping areas and a further 8 by utilising the group room as a sleeping space.
It includes a large internal dining area with views out into the wood. A spectacular 21′ x 21′ group room with access onto two verandas. A fully equipped, spacious kitchen, with a 6-burner range size propane gas cooker, a small gas fridge, storage cupboards, twin sinks and crockery and utensils.
Upstairs there is a chill out space with futons and bean bags that convert to 5 single beds and two separate sleeping snugs. Downstairs is a large bedroom with a double bed and single bed, with two single bunks above. A separate double bedroom, 2 shower rooms and an indoor composting loo.
The Oak House is heated by wood-burning stove and a back boiler system delivers heat to bedrooms so the space is suitable even in the winter months. There is everything you need for a comfortable stay in the wood, just bring bedding.
(available for bookings from May 1st 2020)
The Hideaway will make a big difference to the size of groups and level of comfort we can offer. It is a highly insulated, low-impact timber building, constructed partly with our own wood. It is in a quiet clearing only one minute’s walk from the main buildings.
It has eight bedrooms, all suitable for single or twin occupancy, all with south-facing windows and opening onto a covered walkway which leads to the central services area. This will have three shower cubicles and two composting toilets, along with one super-efficient Biomass boiler providing heating and hot water for the whole building.
The bedrooms are compact, but will each have a wash basin, radiator with thermostatic valve, USB socket to charge a mobile or laptop, and low-voltage reading lights by the beds – features unheard of until now at the wood! We can guarantee that your carbon footprint at the Hideaway, or in any of our buildings, will be a fraction of the UK average!
The Forest Ark is tucked away just 200 meters from the Oak House. This building is best described as growing out of the wood and you can see much of the woods influence in the bespoke finishes inside.
The Ark can accommodate up to 6 people and includes a Wheelchair accessible main double bedroom with an en suite bathroom, and a second double bedroom. The large open-plan living area has sofas, dining area, and a spacious kitchen with large fridge and freezer. The living area can sleep up to four people. There is a second bathroom, accessible from the corridor, and the en suite bathroom is also accessible to other users if desired.
Floor to ceiling windows open out onto a wrap around covered veranda with a BBQ for alfresco dining.
The Ark is the only building in the wood with mains power!
The first accommodation building to be built at the wood, it is heated by a purpose built wood burning stove that also heats a sauna. In addition to the sauna the ground floor has a shower room with hand basins, and a bedroom that can accommodate two. There is additional accommodation for four people in two upstairs sleeping lofts: please note that these lofts have low, sloping ceilings, foam mattresses, and the access to one is by an external staircase and the other by a steep internal staircase.
This is a large, covered circular space, diameter 27′ (8.2m), which was completely rebuilt in 2012 with a vaulted roof and no central support pillar. The new entrance takes the spirit of the building deeper into the Wood. With an earth floor, it has a stone fireplace/altar, and is well suited to dancing, rituals and other group sessions. The Roundhouse can also be used for undercover sleeping.
The tub is a favourite with users. Capacity 9 seated or more if you dare! Set in a glade just away from the Oak house, its magical location is perfect for winding down in the evening, staring at the stars above you.
At the heart of the wood is a seven acre area of mature beech and scots pine, which provides a beautiful, sheltered and well-drained setting for the main camping area and camp circle. This area is only a few minutes’ walk from the covered facilities. There are several other areas suitable for camp circles: normally bookings are limited to 25 people, but occasional larger camping groups can be accommodated.
